Antique Miniature Portrait of a Lady (Lady Sophia)
(Traditionally Identified as “Madame Sophia”)
Continental Europe, late 19th to early 20th century (circa 1890–1910)
A finely executed antique miniature portrait depicting an elegant lady
in formal courtly dress, created during the late 19th to early 20th century,
when miniature portraits and romanticized “Old World” subjects were again
fashionable in European decorative arts.
The sitter is traditionally identified as Madame Sophia, likely a private
individual rather than a documented historical figure—typical for miniature
portraits of this type.
Housed in an original oval brass miniature frame, set within a square veneer
surround with imitation ivory panels and tortoiseshell-style corner inlays,
characteristic of the continental European decorative framing of the period.
Original hanging ring and period paper backing intact.
Miniature portraits were prized for intimate domestic display and
remain highly collectible for their craftsmanship, charm, and timeless elegance.
