Antique Nippon-Era Porcelain Cookie / Biscuit Jar
Japan, c. 1890s–1910s (Early Nippon Export Period)
This elegant antique porcelain cookie jar is attributed to the early Nippon
export era and dates to the late 19th to early 20th century. The piece features
hand-painted floral decoration with open roses and chrysanthemums, enhanced
with rich cobalt blue glazing, delicate gilt scrollwork, and fine raised enamel
bead trim along the rim and lid.
The generously proportioned form with integrated side handles and fitted lid
reflects the high level of craftsmanship associated with early Japanese export
porcelain produced for Western markets. The weight, glaze quality, painterly
decoration, and hand-applied enamel detailing are all consistent with Nippon-era
hollowware. Unmarked examples from this period are well documented,
as many early export pieces predate later standardized country-of-origin
marking requirements or have marks that were lightly applied and
worn away over time.
Dimensions: approx. 8” high x 7” wide
Condition: Excellent antique condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs
A striking and highly decorative example that would make a beautiful
addition to an antique porcelain collection, Nippon-era collection,
or traditional kitchen display.
